Representation task: identification of stereotypes in teen films

Blogging task

What is representation?
Media representations are the ways in which the media portrays particular groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular value perspective. Rather than examining media representations as simply reflecting or mirroring “reality".
For example, beer ads portray drinking beer as a primary component for having a party. SUV ads create the impression that driving an SUV as an exciting, outdoor adventure. And, perfume/cologne ads imply the using perfume/cologne makes one sexually appealing (e.g. lynx).

In today's teen drama films the most common stereotype  consist of:
The popular alpha-female leader
The popular alpha-male leader - good at sports, highly intelligent The nerd - clever, socially incompetent Token black/ethnic girl/guy - angry/cool The misunderstood guy/girl that is an individual and has better morals

films that consist of these stereotypes are films such as:

21 jump street

 Jennifer's Body & scream 4

Stereotypes

Jennifer's Body

In the Teen drama film Jennifer's Body Megan Fox, play's the classic stereotype character of the Alpha female leader 'cheer leader ' in the roll of the character named Jennifer Check.

John Tucker must die

In the teen drama 'John Tucker must die' Jesse Metcalfe play's the stereotype role of the popular alpha male athlete as the character of John Tucker.

ATL

The team Drama 'ATL' featuring T.I. & Lauren London features the classic stereotype of the popular alpha male and female additionally relationships.

My opnion on steryotypes in films

In the film ATL i particularly like the sterotypical popular alpha male character of T.I.. My reason for this being is that althought he is the main character and  male, he is still portrayed in a positive way whereas in other movies the alpha male is usually portrayed as the bully/showoff. Contrastingly in ATL they take this element away and show him in a much more positive light.
