Binary Oppositions

Binary oppositions in teen movie opening

Binary opposition is two related items or ideas that are opposite in meaning. They are frequently used in movies to show for example, good VS evil and is easy for the viewer to understand and relate to.

Examples of binary opposition in teen movies:

Twilight

Twilight is about a teenage girl who risks everything when she falls in love with a vampire. Some binary opposition used is good vampires vs bad vampires, vampires vs wolfs and non- vampires vs vampires. Other binary opposition used is dark, gloomy lighting used on the vampire characters against normal bright lighting on non-vampires which shows the viewers the difference between the two types of characters more clearly. I have also noticed that all the vampires have used make-up to make them look more pale and to portray a vampire look.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Harry Potter is seen as the good guy in everything movie in the series and has been Voldemort's target since the first movie. Vordemort is seen as the most evil guy in the movie and really wants to kill Harry Potter. This is all another example of pure evil VS the good and voldemort's face alone strikes fear into anyone and is very disturbing to look at, he also never seems to smile in any of the movies. Lighting and make-up is also another binary opposition used to make character look either good or evil in the movie for example, voldemort who hasn't got a nose and his eye colour which looks very intimidating and mysterious.
