Real locations that we can use

This blog is about real locations that we can actually use in our teen film opening.

Examples of possible locations we can use:

This is the entrance to city and Islington college and we will be taking a couple shots outside and around the gate.

Sound ideas...

Group 4 have come up with different sounds we can use in our teen opening.

some sounds are used to help the effect of certain scenes.
our suicidal death may have really saddened and dark music.

these songs will play as the killing occurs however it will be low as her voice over plays. we have not chosen which song will play yet but the song will somehow represent the feelings of the girls and help portray the message of suicidal deaths and how tragic they can be.

our most important sound will be the voice over..

this will give the audience a over view of what the film may be about. and some of the events happening.

Props and Settings

Props and Settings

For our teen film, we will be using a mix array of props to enhance out film and make it more realistic and better to watch.

List of props we are going to incorporate in our film:

The bath tub will be the place where the female actor may die in the bath due to drowning or chocking herself under water.

An example of sports shoes that some of the actors may be wearing in the film.

An example of a tracksuit that one or two of the characters could be wearing In the chase scene.

The cigarette will be used by the main character show that when she is stressed out, she uses the stigma related cigarette to calm her down.

Settings that we can use to film:

This will be the scene where the main character is filmed committing suicide by chocking or drowning herself.

Run down areas will be used to show the main characters path to school and used as a backdrop to show how ecumenically deprived the place is.

This area will be used to show the main character entering her school in the morning and possibly leaving in the afternoon, used to show her commitment to education.

Teen Film opening ideas

Here are some of more teen film openings ideas

Below are different videos of teen film openings that our group has analysed.

The first clip is of a young teenage girl who is experiencing the struggles of bullying, this eventually causes the death of the girl as she decides to take her own life. The clip goes on to show what could have happened had the girl had not been bullied. From the clip our group was able to generate ideas of misunderstood or bullied teens resulting in tragic events.

The second clip is about teens identifying who they are. The teens in the film are all wearing masks, and only being seen for what there masks look like. The groups are divided by the colours and designs of there masks. The film focuses on a young lady who is battling to find out who she actually is as she is outcasted for her appearance.

The third clip is a short film about a world where being gay is normal and being straight is the minority.  the clip shows a girl who has grown up with a family of two mothers, the girl gradually develops feeling for a boy. The teen girl is abused when she begins to show her desire for the opposite sex. eventually after all the bullying the girl is pushed to taking her own life.

Ideas for our own teen films

We have thought of several ideas to do for our Teen Film, theses are..

Idea 1
A Fatel stabbing of a young black boy in south London, the stabbing turns boys against each other in south London, due to the fact that the boy was very popular and well known and everybody wanted to find out his killer. The film will consist of the boys family feeling hurt and grieving over there loss. And his friends doing criminal activities as a result of his death. This includes beating up innocent people in public to get information out of them to find his killer ect…

Idea 2

Our other idea is about a young black girl whom gets bullied at school, to the extent where she wants to take her own life. The opening of the film will be her killing herself by drowning herself in the bath, there will be a lot of mis en scene in this part as she will be smoking, wearing raggedy clothes, and have cuts/ scars on her legs. Then after this the tittle sequence will occur and it will go into the opening of our film, the opening will be her school life, and it'll show some occasions of her being bullied and it will explain why she took or will take her life.

Drumline

Drumline is about A band director that recruits a Harlem street drummer to play at a Southern university.
The target audience for this film is teenagers mostly from a different ethnic minorty. Due to the fact that Drumline is about a young black boy from an deprived area who is given a chance to go university.
The key themes in this is hope, school, romance and music.

It wouldnt be directed at boys and boys have nothing to relate to from this film.

This is directed at older teens/young adults as it includes a lot of adult humer and a lot of sexual activities.

Copyright / creative commons

In this group task, we are going to show evidence on the type of sound and music used in teen film openings. Due to certain laws on ownership, using copyright music will incur major problems if you do not contact the owner of the music and ask for permission to use it. It is better off using music which is created from scratch as you will gain more marks for being creative when your work is marked. Finally including sound effects for example ocean waves or a telephone call will also add dynamics to the video and will increase our level or work. Ambient sounds like police sirens or cars speeding down the road will also make the video seem more real and will also increase your grade.

Concept behind creative commons:

Creative commons is a company which allows users to show and share creativity and knowledge using free legal tools. It is mainly used for looking for songs that can be used for any purpose. For example, making a creative movie and needing a song in the background.

Screenshots of creative commons in use:

A shot of the main website page, when you arrive at this part of the website you then click the bottom right button where it says " Find CC-licensed works" and you will be directed to the following page

Then when you arrive on this page you ensure the two boxes under the search button are ticked. Then you either select Soundcloud, Jamendo Or ccMixter, and right a word that describes the music you are looking for, and you'll be directed to the following pages.

Then when you are here you choose and listen to a song that you like / prefer and download it to your Pc/mac and then convert it in audio convert and add it to final cut

Sound lesson (drumline)

This clip is from the film Drumline, and we have added our own music and sound effects from creative common/soundcloud to add effect.

At the beggining of the clip there is a party soundtrack as all the characters are dancing and partying having a good time. After than theres a shot of a young boy in a bed, therefor i included a snoring noise to indicate to the audience he is sleeping. Then after that there fellow team mates came into everybody room with a loud drum, and banging open eveybodys door to wake them up, there for a included a loud banging noise of them opening the doors.

Extension Task 1

I think this sound track from creative commons would work well with the film opening of our teen drama. The reason for this is that it has an intense beat with a big base line, additionally i think it will go well with the opening scenes of our team drama because the instruments used attracts the audience and overall the track gives the audience an impression of what type of film it is going to be.

Furthermore i think this sound would work well with our teen drama film if our group decides to base the film on an american high school year. The reason i think this track would go well is because it sounds fun and upbeat, making the audience excited to watch the film.

shot by shot remake comparison with original

Shot by shot remake comparison with original

This is my groups adaptation of the breakfast club teen movie:

This is the original breakfast club opening:

Comparing my groups adaptation with the original:

My groups adaptation of the breakfast is pretty good, the start of the movie is exactly the same as the original movie and the soundtrack is also the same. The names of the characters in the movie is also the same as the original which makes it more realistic and easier to understand compared with using totally different names. We also used the same quote by David Bowie in the movie.

The first shot of the college in the breakfast club is exactly the same as our film but instead, we used a picture of our college which we found on google search. we also had a voice over by one of my groups members who said the date of which was originally said in the breakfast club opening. The second shot we used shots of the college gates and the building connected to the college which was similar to the original breakfast club opening which consisted of shots of the corridor, canteen and the clock, this was used to keep the film as original as possible.

The third shot consisted of more shots of the corridor and moving shot of a car from the number plate to the windshield. We also added a shot of the library to further prove that we was in the college and make it seem more entertaining. The forth scene was of the dad and the daughter in the car and the daughter existing the vehicle to go to school and the dad wishing her luck in her education, This relates to the original film with the daughter telling her dad she is going to school. The fifth scene is over the daughter leaving the vehicle again but this time her father was slightly angery and also there was a boy leaving the car in the same scene with his mum telling to get out the car in a rude manner.

However in the final scene, we did not capture the bit where all the students entered the hall to sit down and the boy who was told to move from his sit by a bully so he could sit down.

Editing Stages. p1

After we completed our filming on 13th Jan, we uploaded our clips to our hard drive and then to final cut, However we didn't start editing until 16th Jan on our thursday lesson.
In this photo you can see our editing stages. We began to put together our footage of outside the college   , we found this slyly difficult as we couldn't get the shot we wanted, due to the fact that our building had building work at the time, we tried to overcome this program as much as we could by filming to different shots of the college. The entrance where we have to scan our cards, and the appilied science  building as it had the colleges name there.
The next stage we had to over come was the sound. The sound was quite difficult as we had to include voice overs and turn sound down at certain points when the students where talking to their parents.

The voice over was easy to complete, but hard to actually say as we wanted to do it in an American accent to make it look more realistic, so we had to rehearse and redo several times, but finally got one that we all agreed was good enough to include in the film.

If you can see in the picture i had to put dots on the sound to turn the sound down or up when the characters are talking, as the music is louder than their voices.

The next stage for us was doing the title sequence, i copied the same as the original film. As this part of the production couldn't be filmed. I added a fade in fade out transition as it make it seem like the introduction of a film

Behind the scenes of filming The Breakfast Club p1

The video above was taken when we was out filming the beginning of the Breakfast Club.
It was taken on the 13h Jan when our initial filming took place. We liked to have fun and enjoy ourselves when filming otherwise it become boring and repetitive.
All of us Mustafa, Kyrell and Tarjae all had to be included in the acting as we couldn't ask people to act for us as it had to be done during lesson time.

travelling and arriving

Travelling can be shown is different ways in a movie, for example in fast and furious 6, Roman is seen in a G5 gulfstream flying at cruising altitude towards a party and arriving in time and style. This is one way of showing of travelling and arriving in a movie. Fast and furious is centred on speed and the love of tuned cars.

Looking at my group’s short teen movie, it is possible to include scenes which use: vehicles, trains, bicycle and maybe even a sports car which all can be used a props to enhance the film and make it more teen like.

When I analysed the Breakfest Club opening, the first character enters the seen sitting in the front of a BMW car with her father of the other side. The director used midshots on the father and the female. The female is portrayed as full of her and spoilt by the way she speaks and her body language towards the audience. The second character is shown using a jumpcut of the son, the mother and the young daughter all sitting in the front of the vehicle with little to no space to move. The way the mother spoke and her tone seemed that she was not happy and also the vehicle was in terrible condition. The third character is revealed in a close up shot of the dad and son sitting the front car seats, the jacket worn by the character could suggest he is popular in his school and really enjoys football. Finally the last character is shown in a longshot walking across the road and nearly getting run over by a vehicle. This props the character used was earphones and sunglasses and could suggest that he is a hazard to everyone do to his ‘carelessness'

Shot by shot remake-compare your version with the original version

Comparing the breakfast club

Our remake of the breakfast club opening is very similar to the original, yet it also has manny differences.
The very beginning of both clips are exactly the same with the same backing track. Both clips have identical title sequances with the same distribution companies, producers, cast etc.
We have constructed a similar overview of the shots that were taken in the original clip but we have taken similar shots in the college theses are shots such as: outside the collage,  food in the lunch hall, posters on the wall, etc.

During this part we have a voice over of my voice saying the exact same thing as the narrator says. This is a big similarity as the timing of my voice and the narrators are in sync.

Another similarity is the first character we which is the young lady who's known as the 'queen', we portrayed the girl to be a daddy's girl who gets what she wants. The difference between ours and the original is the miss en scene use of props, in the original the father is much older and the pair are in a BMW car. In our clip the father is much younger and we have used a large window to illustrate the cars window additionally the father is wear a scarf similarly, and we have made the daughter wear sunglasses to reinforce her image as 'queen'. Furthermore we have used similar but not the same dialogue between the characters.

We have reenacted the scene between the 'Jock' character and his father. Similarly we have shown the fathers authority over the boy and his strict parenting. The dialogue between the characters are different to that of the original, but the conversation is very similar. Furthermore we used a van to represent the truck driven by the father and have used a collage window to reprsent the car window.

Planning of breakfast club remake

Props
Glasses - this will symbolise the wealth of the 'princess' character. the audience will see that from the fancy glasses and expensive car this family likes luxury items.

Baseball jacket - this is for the character of the 'athlete' this symbolises his character and shows the audience who his characters are. they will then use the stereo types that they have from other teen films to show he is a popular jock.

hoodie - this shows that the criminal character is big and tough, hoodies are usually associated with young criminals that want to be disguised.

Locations

Windows  - we used a window to try and show that the characters were coming out of a car the window showed out side.

we used dashboards corridors and lockers to show that it was set in a school.

Binary Oppositions

Binary oppositions in teen movie opening

Binary opposition is two related items or ideas that are opposite in meaning. They are frequently used in movies to show for example, good VS evil and is easy for the viewer to understand and relate to.

Examples of binary opposition in teen movies:

Twilight

Twilight is about a teenage girl who risks everything when she falls in love with a vampire. Some binary opposition used is good vampires vs bad vampires, vampires vs wolfs and non- vampires vs vampires. Other binary opposition used is dark, gloomy lighting used on the vampire characters against normal bright lighting on non-vampires which shows the viewers the difference between the two types of characters more clearly. I have also noticed that all the vampires have used make-up to make them look more pale and to portray a vampire look.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Harry Potter is seen as the good guy in everything movie in the series and has been Voldemort's target since the first movie. Vordemort is seen as the most evil guy in the movie and really wants to kill Harry Potter. This is all another example of pure evil VS the good and voldemort's face alone strikes fear into anyone and is very disturbing to look at, he also never seems to smile in any of the movies. Lighting and make-up is also another binary opposition used to make character look either good or evil in the movie for example, voldemort who hasn't got a nose and his eye colour which looks very intimidating and mysterious.

Holiday task: Write an analysis of a teen film you have watched.

21 JUMP STREET

The film 21 jump street is based on a two men acting as high school students for the police force to catch out a drug dealer selling a new drug in school.

The target audience:

The target audience for this film is teenagers i can tell as the setting of the film is in a school. another reason the film may be for teenagers is its two main characters being young. both characters have been kicked out of school and are trying to make something of their lives. The audience can relate to this as some children are under achieving yet still have dreams and ambitions also teenagers are very rebellious and up for a challenge.

Characters:

Popular kid - this is the character of the drug dealer he also plays the popular boy with the most power around the school. most of the student look up to this character.

The wannabe - this is the character with low self issues. This character is very powerless yet is very smart and has potential to be someone if they play cool.

The Jock - this is the most good looking male in the school, everyone looks up to him and lusts over him. despite the good looks he is not very intelligent and lacks focus in school because of attention.

 Genre and sub-genre

the genre of the film is comedy, we can see this as the 2 characters mock what its like being police officers and also typical high school characters.
many elements of this film signify that it is a comedy film. some of the sub-genres may be action as there are guns, drugs and fighting

Shot by shot remake task

The Breakfast Club

At the begining of the The Breakfast Club film we see the arrival of each child and there different method of transport whilst arriving to detention, through this we have an impression of what type of person they are or there family background.

The first Character we see is the young lady with short red hair, right away we can see she is from a wealthy background as her father is driving a top of the range BMW car. Through the charcter actions we are given the impression that she is "princess", who is usually stuck up bossy and mean. The characters father seems to be under pressure to make her happy by offering to take her shopping and buy her things. Additionally the characters father is wearing a Burberry designer scarf (prop) , this implies that they are from a family of wealth.

The second character we see is  a boy that comes out of an old beaten up family car. the clothes his wearing stereotypes him to be someone quite ordinary, usually the miss understood character in teen films. Furthermore the characters mother comes across to be quite protected and strict, given the impression they are a close family.

Furthermore the next charater to arrive is the boy wearing a baseball jacket. From the Baseball jacket prop used, it gives us the impression that he is playing the "Jock" character. The boy arrives in a pick up truck with his father suggesting that he is a strong and powerful character. The father is persistantly  going on at his son telling him how he is going to ruin his sporting career if he doesn't get his act together, from this we are given the impression they have a tense relationship.

Moreover the next character in the film is the boy who arrives by foot. This is the only character who does not arrive by car, as the boy walks towards the school he carlessly walks in front of a car, from this it gives us the impression he is the "Outcasted" character.  Additionally the boy arrives without any family giving us the impression that he is very alone.

Next we see a female character exiting a car through the back door without any conversation shown between her and her family. As the girl approaches  the front doors to say bye, before she can the car drives of leaving her stunned, this gives us the impression that she doesn't have a good relationship with her parents.
