Genre and Convention

What is a teen film.

A Teen film is a film where the genre is targeted at teenagers and young adults. The plot is based on special interests of teenagers, such as: First love, coming of age, conflict with parents, alienaion ect. Also common sub genres include, sexuality, fighting, drugs and sports. These are included because most teen films adults tend to watch with there children because its on TV. Also ensure a wider range of target audience so its not just for one specific type of person.
For Example in Greece themes such as, music, romance, dancing and school life is included in the film. In the film the teenagers tend to "hang out" In old car parks, on the street or in a party, because this is generally where  teenagers chill out so when teenagers see this happening in a film they find it amusing and they can relate to it.

Moreover on a typically british working class film would be. My brother the devil, this is about different ethnic minorities (Turkish, Asian, Black) and there themes are, gangs, drugs & money, sexuality and London life for a working class person. The locations where this film in mostly being shot is, in the blocks on a London estate, and a local shop where people "hang out". So there both teen films but have been represented and have come across in different ways due to where it is based. As Greece is based in America and My brother the devil is based in London.

Conventions in teen films depend on the context of the film, however they can include, proms, alcohol, illegal substances, high school, parties and all night raves, losing one's virginity, relationships, social groups and cliques.
Common characters in a teen film would include. The jock/Cheerleader, School diva, Geek/Nerd, The rebel, The outcast, The new girl/boy, The loner, Class hottie, Class clown...American teen films often leave out or skim over characters who are minorities, gay/lesbian, or working class teens. Apart from the characters there are many other codes and conventions of teen film. These films are often set in or around high schools as this allows for many different social cliques to be shown. This is different in hybrid teen films, but for the classic romantic comedy teen film this is almost always the case.

teen movies target audience research (the hunger games, twilight and freaky friday)

Researching Target Audience

The three movies I have chosen are: The Hunger Games, Twilight and Freaky friday. Here are all the trailers.

Freaky Friday trailer:

The intended target audience for freaky friday is people aged for 12 to 28 year old who can relate to the types of situations portrayed in the movie in everyday life with teenagers. Teenagers can also relate to the as teenagers usually have arguments with their parents on and off. This movie would appeal to the female audience as the actor is a female and shows the audience how life really is for a teenager. The main star of the movie is lindsay Lohand. The scene of the mother doing the school run shows how parents are busy and mothers can relate to this. Target Audience

Analise 3 different  different teen movies with different audiences.

Mean girls

The audience for mean girls is teen girls. this is shown through the use of constant female characters throughout the film. the main characters in the film are all girls dressed in pink and wear short skirts. young teen girls will appeal most to this film as they can relate the some of the situations that occur like boys, friendship, parents and conflict and competition within each other. this happens everywhere and being set in a school also helps appeal to young girls as they go to school. The storyline helps young ladies know how to handle unpleasant behavior and how to act towards bad friendship.

Fast and furious

Fast and furious is a film mainly aimed at teen boys. this film is based on girls fast cars and money. this is stereotyped to what most young boys think of. The stories lines within the movie are not really reality related however there is lots of competition and conflict which most young boys tend to have and be when they are at their teenage stage.

Juno

Juno is a film based on a girl that has a child at a young age. this film has the target audience of both girls and boys. The issues a raised in this film such as teenage pregnancy and relationship problems can relate to young parents or those that may want children young. the characters are young and still in school with not much knowledge about parent hood which makes it clear that this film is for teenagers. their are typical athlete characters that are in almost every teen film.

For example, the people from 13 to 20 liked twilight and mean girls they said both movies as they can relate to it and understand unlike the 30 to 40 year old people that find teen movies irrelevant.

30 to 40 years liked more fantasy type of movies. For example, vampire diaries as its intellectual, engaging and appeals to an older audience. From this, we’ve learnt that 30+ year old people wont enjoy teen movies as much as younger people.
